Sources and licences

Oukonjou brings together open public data, OpenStreetMap contributions and suggestions from its users, checked one by one. Here is where the data comes from and under which licences.

Updated on November 3, 2026

France: the Data ES database

In France, facilities come from Data ES (Data Équipements sportifs), the database run by the French ministry for sport, available at equipements.sports.gouv.fr. Owners of sports facilities are required to declare them for this national census.

The data is published under the Licence Ouverte / Etalab 2.0 (French open licence), which allows reuse, including commercial reuse, as long as the source and the date of the last update are credited. Oukonjou shows both on every listing concerned.

OpenStreetMap

Outside France, there is no equivalent national database. The main source is then OpenStreetMap, the free map built by volunteers around the world. OpenStreetMap also fills gaps in the French data where useful.

OpenStreetMap also provides swimming spots outside France, as well as the practical amenities shown around each facility: drinking water points, public toilets, bicycle repair stations and, outside France, defibrillators.

This data is available under the Open Database License (ODbL). Attribution: “© OpenStreetMap contributors”. Details at openstreetmap.org/copyright.

Local open data

When a local authority publishes its own data, we use it alongside OpenStreetMap:

  • Belgium, Brussels: the sport.brussels portal and the “Sports facilities managed by the City of Brussels” dataset published on opendata.brussels.be, reused under the terms set out by each portal.
  • Belgium, Wallonia: Cadasports, the register of sports facilities kept by the Infrasports service, when its data is available.
  • Switzerland: cantonal and municipal datasets published on opendata.swiss, under free-use terms that require crediting the source. Every listing concerned shows the original source.
  • Luxembourg: the City of Luxembourg's “Sport et loisirs” dataset, published on data.public.lu under a CC0 licence.

Andorra and Monaco are covered by OpenStreetMap. For details by country, see the country pages.

Swimming spots in France

In France, swimming spots and their water quality rating (excellent, good, sufficient or poor) come from the “Qualité des sites de baignade” dataset published on data.gouv.fr (producer: TACCT). It is built from raw data from the French health ministry, gathered through the regional health agencies' water testing, using the method set by EU Directive 2006/7/EC. It is updated once a year.

This data is published under the Licence Ouverte / Open Licence 2.0. For current-season results and temporary closures, the official reference remains baignades.sante.gouv.fr.

Walking routes (Geotrek)

Trailheads come from routes published by national and regional parks and by départements (French county councils) using Geotrek, open-source software for managing and promoting trails. Each publisher sets the licence for its own data: it is shown on every listing, together with the publisher's name.

Oukonjou only shows the route's starting point and links to its official page, which gives the route line, the description and the conditions of use.

Defibrillators

In France, Oukonjou shows the nearest defibrillator to each facility using Géo'DAE, the national defibrillator database, published on data.gouv.fr by Atlasanté. Operators of automated external defibrillators are required to register their devices in it. This data is published under the Licence Ouverte / Open Licence 2.0.

Outside France, defibrillators come from OpenStreetMap. Wherever you are, check access to the device on site: it may be inside a building that is closed at certain times.

Weather and air quality

The weather and air quality shown on a facility's listing come from Open-Meteo, which draws on models from national weather services and, for air quality, on the European Copernicus programme. Its data is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) licence. Attribution: “Weather data by Open-Meteo.com”.

Oukonjou uses Open-Meteo's free API, which its terms of use reserve for non-commercial use. Unlike the rest of the data, the weather does not follow the monthly update: it is requested when you open a listing. What is sent when this happens is described in the privacy policy.

User contributions, checked by Oukonjou

Users can suggest a facility that is missing from the map. Every suggestion is checked by hand before it is published, using aerial imagery, the photos sent and the available sources. Approved facilities are marked “Verified contribution” on their listing.

This information is distributed under the Open Database License (ODbL), the same licence as OpenStreetMap. Attribution: “© Oukonjou and its contributors”. It may be offered to OpenStreetMap. Verification photos are never published and are not covered by this licence. To obtain this data, write to us from the contact page.

If the same facility later appears in an official source, Oukonjou shows that source instead of the contribution.

Towns and areas

For town search in France, Oukonjou uses the French government's API Géo (geo.api.gouv.fr), whose data is published under the Licence Ouverte.

Base map and mapping library

  • Base map: OpenFreeMap, a free service with no API key and no cookies, built on the OpenMapTiles schema and OpenStreetMap data. Attribution: “OpenFreeMap © OpenMapTiles, data from OpenStreetMap”.
  • Cycle lanes: the cycle lane layer shown on the map comes from the same OpenFreeMap base map, and therefore from OpenStreetMap data. It does not use any other source.
  • Map display: the MapLibre GL JS library, open-source software released under a BSD licence.

Typefaces

The site uses Big Shoulders Display, Atkinson Hyperlegible and IBM Plex Mono, under the SIL Open Font License. They are hosted with the site, so displaying them does not call any third-party service.

How the data is updated

The data is refreshed automatically once a month: Oukonjou fetches the latest version of each source, then updates the map and the listings. A fix made at the source therefore shows on Oukonjou by the next update at the latest.

Facilities suggested by users follow a different pace: once approved, they appear on the map within the hour, or by the next update at the latest.

The date of the source's last update is shown on every listing.

Reporting a mistake

  • In France: for a mistake, write to the Data ES team from the “Contact” section of equipements.sports.gouv.fr, stating the facility and the correction. For a missing facility, let its owner know, usually the local council: declaring it is the owner's job.
  • Elsewhere: fix or add the facility on OpenStreetMap. Creating an account is free.
  • A missing facility: suggest it on the Suggest a facility page. Every suggestion is checked before it is published.
  • In any case: you can also write to us from the contact page. We do not edit official or OpenStreetMap data by hand, but we can point you in the right direction. We do correct verified contributions.
